Evaluaton powerpoint.
I have enjoyed learning how to become a media producer though out this piece of course work.
However I would have changed a few element to my music video, such as give clearer indications of the different careers that my band members are portraying such as giving Kate an Oscar, having people filing out ballot papers for Aysia and the scientist receiving a Noble Prize for her work. However I didn't have enough money to show this, therefore couldn't film it. I would also use more distorted angles on Kate's face while she sang, rather then just having the simple close up shot, although Demi Lovato a singer that my target audience likes uses very little variety of close ups in her 'La La Land' music video, therefore I wanted to stay true to the connotations of Hollywood records and only use a small variety of close ups, but they use different angles for the Jonas Brothers, which i tried to incorporate into my music video.
I feel that I have developed in terms of filming and evaluating my coursework, and I am very glad that I have done it, and happy about the way it turned out.
Below is a script i wrote for some of the slides featured on the above power point.
Evaluation by Natasha Khaleeq
Slide 1: Hello my name is Natasha Khaleeq my candidate number is 3391 and I go to Coombe Girls School and I made a music video to the song ‘Great Things’
Slide 2: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Slide 3 (film inspiration): at the end of my music video I wanted some what of a dramatic ending, to make it stand out and be remembered, so I decided to include a chase sequence, with the inspiration of the Jonas Brothers movie a 3D concert experience, which applies to Andrew Goodwin’s point of intertexual references within a film and music videos. (play the video). As you can see there is a lot of footage in this clip, so I had to develop it be choosing the bits that applied most to the conventions of a successful band, as you can see from the still images on this slide. I also used cut aways from this footage, for my own chase scene, their match on-action edit, for my phone/rose chucking scene which goes well with Goodwin’s point about the relationships between the music, lyrics and visuals as the rose and phone represent the release of ‘bullets’, and also their slow motion bit when they run into the helicopter for my slow motion bit when Kate is about to chuck the phone. I also used the fans screaming in my music video, by quieting the songs sound, to show the band ever growing popularity.
Slide 4: I also used Demi Lovato’s music videos as inspiration for my camera angles and mise-en-scene. As you can see from this slide I used her medium close-ups but developed them into mid shots of Kate walking down the corridor as I thought this would show more of the mise-en-scene showed in the music video as set the scene.
Slide 5: I also used Lovato’s idea of her face on a magazine to show my main singers famous attributes; however I changed the shot into a close-up instead of extreme close-up because I wanted to show the audience that the picture was of Kate, and make it more clear between the connection of her and the conventions of fame. I also used Demi’s close up shots which is the conventions of typical music video’s, however I would use more of them as I feel that my music video did not show enough close up shots but more of the medium close up shots, and her ripping up the picture of her boy friend, however this challenged the conventions of a typical happy feel good music video meant to be about great things as it presents an element of sadness.
Slide 6: Lovato’s use of mise-en-scene in her ‘La la land music video’ was used in my own music video as I thought that the character she portrayed ‘some one that thinks the fame industry is fake and is lade back’ is similar to Kate’s character of someone that thinks love is fake as they are hurt by their boyfriend but becomes stronger because of it and is more successful. Therefore I used the same type of shirt for my character as Demi is wearing.
Slide 7: I also used a range of music videos that either featured or were created by Taylor Lautner, such as the ‘Caught up in you video’ in which I copied the idea of being in a relationship, however I challenged the typical themes of my music video again by showing Roberto and myself (the other woman) as more in love then he is with the main singer creating a depressing aspect to my video. They also frame the main bit of this scene which is the rose, so I chose to use a mid shot to highlight this prop, rather then the closeness between the two.
Slide 8: I used this clip to show the end of a career and the beginnings of a new one, however this still challenges the conventions of normal ‘High school Musical’ ish music videos as my target audience would not accept to see, burning paper in a music video called ‘great things’.
Slide 9: As you can see from this slide, I have used various shot based on the Jonas Brothers music videos ‘Paranoid and SOS’, an aerial shot, a side on shot, and an extreme close up. This applies to the demands of Hollywood records in terms of using lots of close-ups of my artists. This is another one of Goodwin’s points.
Slide 10: from this slide you can see that I have used the Jonas brothers, line vines and trying times album cover for the inspiration of my own. However I developed their product by changing the colour to purple as I thought this would portray my band as girly and rockish. I also made the band seem more huddled together showing their closeness as sisters and they are also pretty girls creating an ‘I want to be like them’ feeling. I also made the writing style of the tracks look more futuristic rather then plain as I wanted to present a different aspect to the pop rock music genre. I also made the writing brighter and clearer.
Slide 11: these clips are examples of the way I represent Goodwin’s point about the relationship between the lyrics and visuals, the clip on the left shows Kate reading a classic ‘Childhood tail’ which is part of the lyrics. Where as in the picture on the right Aysia is actually typing out the lyrics. To show the process of a band writing lyrics to a song.
Slide 12: during my research I looked at various MySpace and Face book pages, that were of the same genre and had the same target market as my band, I found out that the MySpace websites had different music videos, a contact box, upcoming shows and lots of friends, however my MySpace is quite limited and only contains the essentials such as concert dates, and an about me section, and also different photo albums. I also couldn’t put the bands song on my profile due to copyright issues. However I found the face book page to be easier to make because I needed to include basic information, photos and friends.
Slide 13: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Slide 14 and 15: I feel that the way I used different elements of synergy, such as my websites, Face book and MySpace, Album cover and actual music video, is well done, as the MySpace and album cover have the same colour scheme, which conveys a rockish, girly theme to my media products, you can also tell that the main singer is Kate because the album cover has her in the centre and she is in most of the music video. The same types of photos are used in my websites and album cover and so is the band name, showing that they are all types of synergy belonging to the same band. However although my media products work well together, the face book and MySpace pages do not have a lot of fans, which shows that the band is not very popular, yet, however as they are playing at lots of different concerts so they will gain lots of different fans. I think that it is clear that the album cover is from the pop/rock genre because it is bright and simple in the front and dark and mysterious at the back, having the same connotations of the Jonas Brothers which are form the same genre and also same record company as my chosen one, which is Hollywood records. The MySpace and Face book pages are also similar to that of the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato who are both from the pop/rock genre. I also have the same friends as they do, further emphasising that we are from the same record company. However I do feel that the MySpace and face book need to be more pop/rock based by including more applications such as videos, and posted notes. Although the music video is very pop/rock as it includes musical instruments and heart break which shows the connotations of rock music videos, but still has a narrative, and funny moments such as how the fans reacts to the celebrity character which are connotations of pop music videos.
The word Echo is derived form mythology as a mountain nymph who pined away for love of the beautiful youth Narcissus until only her voice remained. Therefore portrayed the artists as beautiful people, this meaning is also used in my music video because Kate gets her heart broken by Roberto, but still has her singing voice left, an echo also means a lingering trace or effect, so the name will stick in the minds of others. I also used the colour purple and white in some of my scene, such as Aysia typing up her speech, Kate and her suite and when I played the drums. The name Echo also means a sound that gets repeated, therefore I would hope for the music video to get played lots of times. a lingering trace or effect, again something that will remain in the minds of my target audience. a person who reflects or imitates another the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato.
Slide 16: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Slide 17: my target audience is girls aged 10-17 years, who watch the Disney Channel, Like the Twilight Saga and according to rubicame and young ideas they are explorers looking for the need to discover themselves, wanting to do ‘Great Things’ they are aspirer wanting to be perceived as the best and being popular and also belong in the mainstreamed category by following what is popular. Before I made my music video I interviewed a group of 6 of them about what they would like to see in the music video and the main points that came out of the discussion was, a chase sequence, instruments, beautiful people, attractive guys and for the main theme to be a happy one and people to do great things they also said that they get to know who a band is by word of mouth. After trying to include all of this I showed a rough cut to them and they said that although it was a good video, it needed to have more close ups, more cuts, and not look like a video made by a group of friends, they also thought that some bits didn’t make sense. Having then tried my best to include their points, by adding more close ups, cuts and by adding clips of the band becoming friends again after bullying each other, (like sisters do) I had a final product which I showed to the same 6 people I interviewed in the beginning of my work, and they said that it was what they expected as I looked like High school musical, (as the locations are mostly in school because that it where people start to grow into something great hence the title of the song), that the video was fun, happy and entertaining, especially the celebrity bit. However one of them said that she didn’t get the love triangle bit, however this challenges the general connotations of happy fun-loving music videos, so I wanted to keep it in as one of the verses talks about love and war, an another person said they didn’t understand the science bit, however I wanted to show some one doing something that was educationally great for the intellectual fans who aspire to be something involving academics, therefore making the music video relatable.
Slide 18: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Slide 19: Whilst I was doing this piece of coursework, I used a wide variety of software and hardware programs. Soft ware includes programs such as word, power point, photo shop and the internet. Hardware includes my phone, still camera, a CD player, an iPod, an apple computer, a lab top, and a DV camcorder.
Slide 20: during my research I used the internet to go on to various websites such as you tube, here as some examples of the videos I researched using that website. Although you tube can be useful in terms of researching and viewing different media texts, it may not allow you to view text that are only for viewers in America, are over 18 and considered vulgar. The images may also be blurry and pirate copies, which are illegal and shouldn’t be posted or watched. This is why the industry is trying to take extra precautions, and tries to prevent free downloading however as that nearly impossible, concert ticket prices have been raised, as a ticket that is meant to cost £20 costs £30 or £40. You tube can also block the sound of videos that contain WMG music, which is why the sound featured on my pilimminary tasks were removed.
Slide 21: I also used the internet to create a magazine cover with Kate’s face on it however, this proved to be a limiting process as I couldn’t change the words on the magazine cover to my preferred headlines, and the newspaper websites that allowed me to do this made the picture blurry, I also used the internet to construct a degree which worked well as it allow me to put all the information I needed on to the degree. I used Microsoft word to construct ballot papers, and word allowed me to do this, however on a whole word can be limited when it comes to making videos and animations.
Slide 22: However power point enables me to do this, by allowing me to use animation, it also enables me to do this, however when I have information form the internet it goes into writing that barely readable and hard to condense. Also I can’t put my power point presentations on to blog spot, therefore have to use slide show.
Slide 23: during the planning process I used the internet to look up various storyboards, which helped me design my own.
Slide 24: I used a scanner to transfer my images to the computer; however it made the writing very small, and also made the storyboards side ways.
Slide 25: during the planning process I also used my phone and a still camera to take pictures of locations, however it has low battery life couldn’t be used all the time and had to be constantly recharged. Whist I was doing my preliminary tasks and my actual project I used various technologies such as DV cameras which are limiting as they have low battery life and don’t work well in low light, however this wasn’t an issue for me as I mostly filmed outside, it is also portable so can go to many different locations, but also limiting because if you make a slight movement the camera goes fuzzy, a lighting kit having and very hard to set up. During the editing process I used a mac computer which is useful as it easy to edit on and you can also add various effects to my film such as slow motion and face out. However it is also very limiting as the computer crashed and deleted my work several times, making me have to start from scratch which was very stressful.
Slide 26: expamples of my paliminary tasks and actual.
Slide 27: Photoshop was used for my album cover, although it has a good range of effects; such as changing colour, using interesting fonts such as Edwardian scipt MT and Agency FB (the ones that i used for my digipak), blending, and making the final product look glossy. However it doesn’t able you to put interesting font from the internet on to the CD, therefore I had to choose a plain one. It also doesn’t have clear defined writing and blurs it if it gets to small.
Slide 28: Thank you, for listening. Finally I would like to say that if I had enough money and wasn’t working by myself I would like to include more extravagant bits such as Kate winning an Oscar and maybe careers like a pilot or astronaut. Although I would like to keep the idea of the ballot papers, I would like their to be more people in my music video and bigger locations where the band preformed.
Hollywood records, is a good record company to use as the target audience for my band is teenagers who like twilight and the Jonas Brothers, and also like reading but at the same time enjoy going to the cinema and going shopping with their friends. Hollywood records is the Jonas Brothers recording label it, enables them to have live webcam talks which enables them to interact with their fans, hopefully by joing with Hollywood records it will enable the echo's to do the same thing, the Jonas Brothers also have their own you-tube account as well as their own twitter account and myspace, so hopefully Hollywood records will enable the Echos to do that.

Digipak (album cover).
My album cover was inspired by the Jonas Brothers, as you can see from the above picture, however I feel that my album will stand out and grab my target markets attention because it is bold and bright, it is also the colour that fans wanted as it is in purple, but still really girly.
Audeince interivew
According to rubicame and young ideas they are explorers looking for the need to discover themselves, wanting to do ‘Great Things’ they are aspire wanting to be perceived as the best and being popular and also belong in the mainstreamed category by following what is popular.
For my audience research I interviewed a couple of people from this target market.
Interview:
1. What do you expect to see in a music video that is made by a group like the Jonas Brothers, but instead they are girls?
A: lots of instruments, a handsome guy and to have the video made in a school.
E: for it to be something like High School Musical, very Disney and fun.
C: I expect to see an attractive person and the band having a good time.
M: I would expect to see people being happy.
R: I would expect to see, people dressing up, having fun, getting chased and handsome guys.
J: a chase seen probably and lots of close ups.
2. How would you expect an album cover to look like?
A: bright and bold something that standout of the shelf.
E: something with the bands faces, and a girly colour.
C: Bright, with writing that catches your eye.
M: Something that's bold.
R: something that catches your eye, maybe a purple colour as they are girls.
J: something that has the band on it.
3. How much would you pay for an album?
A: £10
E: probably about £8-£10 depending on how popular the band is,
Rest: yeah probably £10.
4. What costumes do you expect to see in the music video?
A: dresses.
E: classic prom dresses.
C: yeah, I agree defiantly dresses.
M: Dresses but have a casual look to.
R: yeah like jeans and a plaid t-shirt, like Demi Lovato.
5. What locations do you expect to see in the video?
All: school.
E: like High School Musical, especially if it is low budget because schools aren't very expensive to shoot at.
6. How do you hear about bands?
A: through sites like myspace and facebook,
E: through word of mouth, my friends usually like a band and then tell me about it or the other way around.
R: through interviews in a magazine, or adverts of concert dates.
M: through my friends ipods, or they might send me some of their downloads by email, of bands they like.
C: though radio stations or MTV and the Disney Channel.
7. What do you think of piracy?
M: I think its a really bad thing, however we are students and don't have a lot of money so can't really spend money on getting albums,
E: I agree, however i think that we should be able to buy a couple of songs that we really like from I-tunes even if its not the whole album.
J: I feel that piracy is a really bad think, and maybe more musicians should be like Radio head and let their fans decide how much their music is worth, hopefully that would put a stop to so much piracy.
8. What do you think concert tickets are too expensive and how much would you spend on them, also where do you get your tickets from?
A: I think the price of some artists/bands tickets are ridiculous such as Mylie Cyrus, the majority of her fans are children, yet her ticket prices are £60, that like saying to a parent, even though my music isn't really for you, why don't you pay £120 for tickets to see me.
E: I agree some concert tickets are really over priced, however I wouldn't mind spending £10-£20 for a new band and £30-£40 for popular bands I mean the Jonas Brothers tickets are £40 and their as popular as Mylie Cyrus.
R: yeah i agree £10-£40, i also get my tickets at Ticketmaster.
C: yeah i get my tickets at Ticketmaster or on the bands website.
9. How much money would you spend on merchandise? And do you write your favourite bands name in your notebooks whilst doodling?
J: i would definitely by the bands t-shirt or hoddies, yeah I do, so it helps that the font isn't to complicated.
A: band t-shirt, no not really.
R: I would buy everything such as t-shirts, hoddies, bags and calenders, yeah the Jonas Brothers are my favorite band, so I like the fact that their band logo isn't to complicated and hard to copy.
M: yeah i would probably buy the a band t-shirt.
10. What you like about bands like the Jonas Brothers and what do you think other bands that are like them should do?
A: i like the fact that they make web casts for their fans on face book, as it is a great way of interacting with them, so it would be cool if another band did that.
E: yeah i like the fact that they have a twitter account, so a band should defiantly have one so that their fans can interact with them.
R: The Jo Bros are really charitable to if a band had their own charity or gave money to one, I think that will gain them popularity as it would show that they are good people, also Kevin is very good looking, so the band should have attractive people in it.
C: no Nick and Joe are really good looking, and I don't think that really matters as long as their music is good. Also they make really funny videos on you tube, so it would be good if the band did that so that they would come off us very funny and relatable, or maybe host a few award shows like the 'Teen Choice Awards'
J: I think the way they have different competitions are good as fans can win merchandise, I think it would be good if another upcoming band did that, it would also get them more noticed.
From doing this interview i found out that, the music video should have locations in a school as in High School Musical, and include fancy dresses such as prom dresses, the album should be bright and bold and maybe be the colour purple, the name of the band shouldn't have complex writing as fans won't be able to copy it, the album also it should be £10, that tickets should be priced at £10 and then slowly rise as the band gets more popular, and the band should also do different competitions in which fans can win merchandise, have live web cast for fans to interact with them, also have a charity, and have a twitter page like the one below.
www.twitter.com/TheEchosCoombe
Having done a rough cut I asked the same group of girls what they thought and this is what they said.
J: I think there needs to be a lot more close ups, as it looks more like a movie rather then a music video.
E: I think there needs to be a lot more cuts, as it is too slow passed.
C: It kind of looks boring and to simple.
A: there needs to be more instrumental pieces.
R: yeah like close ups of Kate singing, and it also looks to confusing, how did the band reunite? maybe you should include that in your video.
M: may you should include different locations.
Therefore i started to film more close ups, and instrumental bits, with different locations, such as the scientist bit where she is studying, as well as more complex stories such as the love triangle and the reunited sisters.
After I made the video I had them watch it and this is what they said;
1. Did you like the music video and if so what did you like?
R: I really liked it as it was fun and happy, and I especially liked the chase scene which showed the bands success.
A:I thought the editing was done really well, I also liked it because it showed a true portrayal of 'Great Things', I thought the guy was very handsome.
M: good, happy and fun rather than depressing and I also liked the bit when Kate threw the phone.
E: I really liked it as it was happy and fun and very High School Musical.
C: I liked it a lot, it reminded me of High School Musical, the location fit, and you saw the right amount of instruments.
2. What didn't you like?
M: the weird love triangle.
rest: nothing, we all thought it was really good.
A: the burring of the paper bit.
E: I thought the narrative was a bit confusing as it had to much going on.
R: I think you should have used more variety of close up shots.
I feel that I had overall positive feedback, and hopefully my target audience will see more of the under laying plot lines, as they watch the video more, getting it more viewings.
As a class when we had finished our music video we presented to the class and then we wrote good point and bad points about each others music videos.
my comments were:
'I liked the spirit of the video - it feels young so made sense to set it in a school setting. However I found the narrative a little confusing at times, why was the band being chased by girls?'
'Good: some nice edits. Bad: I didn't understand what was happening'
'I liked the editing, how it was all fitted together like the narrative, I don't think the location was right for the song and costume as well.'
' I thought the narrative was good, but the location was bad as you can tell that it was in a school'
'I thought the narrative was good, but the instruments were a bit out of synced'
'Edits were good, casting was quite believable and costumes was nice, but I didn't understand all of it, some drum bits were a bit out of synced'
'I liked the match on action edits, i thought when she threw the rose it worked really well.'
But I think the different narratives in the video weren't very clear'
'I liked the narrative, but the location could have been better'
'Narrative near the end was a little confusing, although I liked the way you told a story through the whole video'.
'like the pace of edits as it suited the music's pace, Kate was very good as lead singer as she was very believable, the music video was fun and interesting. However I didn't understand the story, the video had random close-ups, the drummer was bad, there was also a lack of imagination in costume and location as you can clearly see what they are.'
'really nice edits, but I lost the plot/narrative by the end'
'Singer looked believable, I also liked the edit where the phone is thrown and it cuts to the flower being thrown, however I was a little bit confused by the narrative'
'the edits were well thought about and constructed, but the narrative is confusing'
'good casting, good narrative through the whole video, should have filmed in other locations and synced the instruments better'
'edits are really fast and snappy, really fit in with music casting is quite on point, however you should have used different costumes as a black prom dress don't really combine too well together, you need more narrative.'
'I liked the shots where he rose was used by the wall, however I didn't understand the narrative or characters'.
The main points taken from the class quotes (above) is that the narrative is to confusing however I feel that this problem can be over come by the audience watching the music video multiple times, all I feel that having a complex narrative will gain the video more viewings as it will help the audience to deduce the plots. However I feel that I could have made the narrative less complex by showing all the girls starting off in school then, becoming their different careers. Also if I had more access to different actors, then the different characters in each short sketch could have been played by someone other then the people in the band for example, when Aysia is asking for Kate's autograph, the 'fan' could have been played by someone else. Some people also said that the ending was confusing, however i wanted to show the band becoming successful and being chased by fans, (inspiration was taken from the 'Jonas Brothers 3D concert experience' film). However some people liked the narrative which is a good thing and proves that in the media industry some people will like your work but others wont. Everyone liked the edits as they thought it was fast paced and liked the cast choice, which proves that I made the right decision in casting Kate as the lead singer.
Some people didn't like the location, however I wanted to attract the Disney 'High School Musical' loving teenagers, therefore thought filming in school would go well with my music video, also many artist have had their music video's in schools such as Taylor Swift, Mylie Cyrus, Paramore. Shooting in a school also goes with the youthfulness of the song, so is retable to my target audience.
location research and costume research and cast research.
I used this prop as it has connotations to Taylor Launtner's video Apologize, it also resembles the end of one career path and the beginning of another. so the end of following the dream of becoming a scientist and the accomplishment of the dream of being in a successful band.
i chose to use this prop to make the break up scene more clear, as it tell the fans what actually happens.
I chose to use this mise-en-scene, as it had connotations from the Jonas Brothers 3D movie, i also wanted to show the band members being chased by their fans and them getting away safely.
I chose to the use the mise-en-scene of a wallet so that it is relatable to the target audience, as they are teenagers who carry purses.
Kate is wearing a dress to emphasise her celebrity personal, where as I am wearing a shirt, skirt and goggles to show my scientist half of my character.
I am wearing jeans and jumper to show the young freshness to my band persona, where as Kate is wearing a blazer, skirt and shirt to emphasize the age difference and how she is the more sophisticated band member.
Aysia is wearing a plaid skirt to highlight the band factor inside her character, but is also wearing a more formal shirt in order to portray her character's high status side of running as a presidential candidate.
Aysia is wearing a black coat to show that her character is evil, and that she is portraying the character that is a metaphor for the doubt in people's minds, which is also played by me as shown below.
I am wearing a lab coat with goggles, to show that my Passion is science and that its my 'Great Thing'
